Security forces in Arunachal Pradesh have intercepted a Myanmar national attempting to cross into Indian territory with suspected opium, in a joint anti-narcotics operation that underscores heightened vigil along the sensitive international border.
On May 7, a coordinated team of Nampong Police and the Special Task Force (STF) acted swiftly on credible intelligence inputs about illegal cross-border movement and narcotics smuggling in the Nampong area of Changlang district. The operation led to the arrest of 40-year-old Laho Kaita Kaisan, who was trying to enter India from Myanmar.
During the search, authorities recovered approximately 420.5 grams of suspected opium and cash amounting to Rs 1 lakh from his possession. The seized items were confiscated as per procedure, and a detailed case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the Immigration Act, and the Foreigners Act. Further investigation is underway to determine possible links to larger interstate or international smuggling networks.
Officials noted that surveillance and patrolling have been significantly stepped up along the Indo-Myanmar border in view of rising concerns over infiltration and drug trafficking activities in the region. This recent seizure adds to ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the flow of narcotics into Northeast India.
Changlang district, sharing a porous border with Myanmar, has witnessed several such incidents in the past. Authorities believe sustained intelligence-driven operations and better coordination between various agencies are crucial to dismantling smuggling rackets operating in the area.
Local residents and border villages have also been encouraged to remain alert and share any suspicious information with security forces. Such proactive measures not only help in checking illegal activities but also contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the frontier regions.
This incident serves as a timely reminder of the persistent challenges posed by cross-border smuggling while highlighting the commitment of Arunachal Pradesh Police and central agencies in safeguarding the region’s security and curbing the drug menace.
