India have taken a 1-0 lead in their five-match ODI series against New Zealand after winning the rain-hit series opener at Eden Park, Auckland, by five wickets. Virat Kohli smashed his 80th half-century in one-day internationals and took a spectacular catch to help India chase down a revised target under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method after repeated rain showers interrupted the reply.
Kohli scored 74 from 51 balls, including 13 fours and a six, before holing out off Jacob Duffy. Captain Shubman Gill contributed 37, and the pair put together 113 runs for the second wicket after Rohit Sharma fell for a duck in the first over. Kohli also moved past Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in ODI run chases, according to match reports.
Bowlers set up the win
India’s young pace attack bowled New Zealand out for 185 in 40.2 overs after Gill won the toss and chose to bowl. Arshdeep Singh led with four wickets for 70 runs, Gurnoor Brar picked up three for 44, and Anshul Kamboj claimed two for 22. Tim Seifert top-scored for the hosts with 38, but New Zealand never recovered from the early damage. Kohli delivered Kamboj his first wicket with a brilliant diving slips catch to remove Nathan Smith for one.
Rain then interrupted India’s chase twice, forcing officials to revise the target. India were eventually set 143 runs to win in 32 overs under the DLS method, down from the original target of 186 in 50 overs. India reached 143 for five in 22.4 overs, with KL Rahul and Naman Dhir unbeaten at the end, sealing the win with 56 balls to spare despite losing four wickets for 22 runs near the finish. Kamboj was named Player of the Match for his disciplined spell.
What the win means for the series
The win offered a significant boost to India’s bowling unit, which was without several experienced fast bowlers and still dismissed the hosts cheaply on a tricky Eden Park surface. For New Zealand, it was a first defeat in an opening match of a home ODI series in 12 series. The next match moves to Wellington, where New Zealand will look to regroup and India will aim to press home the advantage.
India’s women previously claimed a first-ever World Cup crown with a dominant victory over South Africa, while Arunachal cricketer Techi Doria struck 160 against Manipur in the Ranji Trophy and six young Arunachal athletes were picked for the Army Sports Institute after a talent camp in Tawang. The Auckland win sits within that wider Indian cricket story: established stars delivering, and new talent emerging from every corner of the country.
