Arunachal Police Seize Heroin Worth Rs 20 Lakh in Changlang

Police in Changlang district have seized 261.85 grams of heroin worth about Rs 20 lakh and arrested a woman, officials said, renewing the state government's zero-tolerance pledge against drugs.

Arunachal Pradesh Police have seized 261.85 grams of heroin valued at approximately Rs 20 lakh and arrested a woman in Changlang district, in what officials describe as a significant strike against drug trafficking in the border belt.

A Tip-Off That Paid Off

Acting on a tip-off, police recovered the contraband from the possession of Shimnya Sangwal at New Khamdu village under the Nampong police station area. Sangwal, a resident of Lungka village, was taken into custody in connection with the seizure. A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, police said.

The Investigation Continues

Officials said further investigation is underway to trace the source of the seized heroin and to determine whether other individuals are part of the alleged trafficking network. With 261.85 grams changing hands in a single operation, investigators believe the seizure points to an organised supply chain rather than a lone carrier. Changlang district shares a border with Myanmar, and the frontier corridor has long been flagged as a pressure point for the illegal movement of narcotics — a pattern also seen in an earlier joint anti-narcotics operation in Bordumsa in the same district.

Zero Tolerance, Reaffirmed

Home Minister Mama Natung commended the police for the seizure and reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance stance towards illegal drugs. “Our government maintains zero tolerance against illicit drugs. Anyone threatening the future of our youth will face the full force of the law,” he said in a social media post praising police personnel for their vigilance. The message echoes the state’s broader anti-drug mobilisation, which has drawn support from the Governor and the Chief Minister. Authorities say sustained enforcement remains critical, and the latest seizure signals that no part of the state is beyond the reach of the law.
