Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first operational stretch of Chennai Metro Phase 2 — a 15-km elevated corridor between Vadapalani and Poonamallee built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore.
The Prime Minister flagged off services on the new Yellow Line and took a ride on the metro alongside Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, becoming the first passenger on the newly opened stretch. Modi purchased a paper ticket at the counter before boarding and briefly interacted with staff at the ticket counter.
The ceremony was attended by Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Regular passenger services on the stretch run daily from 7 am to 9 pm in both directions from October 12.
Eleven Stations on the New Corridor
The stretch, part of Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro Phase 2, has 11 elevated stations: Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee Bus Stand, Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyappanthangal, Thelliyaragaram, Porur Bypass, Porur Junction and Vadapalani.
A key engineering feature of the corridor is a 3.7-km double-decker structure, along with advanced signalling systems designed to enable driverless train operations in the future. The line is expected to cut travel time between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre.
A ₹13,000-Crore Infrastructure Push
The metro inauguration headlined a wider set of announcements, with the Prime Minister launching development projects worth around ₹13,000 crore for Tamil Nadu. These include highway works on NH-744, railway projects such as the Karaikal–Peralam line and redeveloped stations at Palani, Vellore Cantonment and Namakkal, upgraded facilities at Chennai, Kamarajar and V.O. Chidambaranar ports, and the foundation stone for a lubricant base stocks project at the CPCL Manali refinery.
Chennai Metro Phase 2 as a whole spans 118.9 km across three corridors with 128 stations, and is intended to connect residential neighbourhoods, industrial areas and commercial centres across the city.
