Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where the Prime Minister assured the state government of all possible assistance in restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur.
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s official residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. After the meeting, Khemchand Singh wrote on his official X account: “It was a privilege to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji. His visionary leadership continues to inspire our commitment to building a peaceful, prosperous and Viksit Manipur as part of Viksit Bharat.”
The Chief Minister is in the national capital with a packed schedule of meetings with Union ministers.
Meetings With Shah, Gadkari and Mandaviya
Khemchand Singh separately called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his official residence, where he briefed the Home Minister on measures taken by the state government to restore peace and normalcy.
According to a senior official of the Chief Minister’s Office in Imphal, Shah assured the Chief Minister of the Centre’s full support in restoring peace, ensuring progress and fulfilling the aspirations of Manipur’s people, and appreciated the state government’s sustained efforts. The Chief Minister also met Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. All three Union ministers indicated that they would visit Manipur soon.
Signs of Normalisation
The Chief Minister told Shah that the state government has succeeded in resuming the Imphal–Dimapur–Guwahati bus service, which had been suspended for more than three years. The restored link is being cited by the state government as evidence of gradual normalisation.
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic tensions since May 2023, and the current round of engagement comes amid continuing Kuki-Naga friction. The state government, which includes Deputy Chief Ministers Losii Dikho of the Naga community and Nemcha Kipgen of the Kuki community alongside the Meitei Chief Minister, is being watched closely for steps toward a political resolution.
