Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on April 7 welcomed the Supreme Court’s directive ordering the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a preliminary enquiry into allegations of irregular allotment of government contracts.
The Supreme Court on April 6 directed the CBI to register a preliminary enquiry and submit its report within 16 weeks, indicating whether a full-fledged investigation is required. The order pertains to public works contracts allegedly awarded to firms linked to the Chief Minister’s family members, including his nephew Tsering Tashi.
Reacting to the apex court’s order, CM Khandu said the enquiry would help “clear the air” and reinforce transparency in governance. He asserted that his government has “nothing to hide” and would extend full cooperation to the CBI to ensure a fair and independent probe.
Khandu described the directive as a positive opportunity, stating, “This is a good opportunity for me to demonstrate that I am not guilty.” He noted that the matter has been a recurring controversy for over a decade and expressed confidence that the facts would be established through the legal process.
The Chief Minister assured that the state government and all concerned departments would provide necessary documents and extend complete support to the investigating agency.
This development follows a petition filed by two organisations — Save Mon Region Federation and Voluntary Arunachal Sena — alleging favouritism and procedural lapses in the award of contracts.
The Supreme Court’s order has intensified political debate in the state, with the opposition Congress demanding the Chief Minister’s resignation on moral grounds.
