Guwahati: In a proactive step to ensure smooth and violence-free polling in sensitive inter-state border areas, senior civil and police officials from Assam and Meghalaya held a joint inspection and coordination meeting at Lumpi along their shared boundary. The initiative focuses on facilitating free, fair, and peaceful voting during the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections in 2026.
The high-level visit, which took place on Thursday, included a review of preparedness in border villages under Boko in Kamrup district. This was followed by a detailed coordination discussion at Lower Lumpi, attended by local residents from the affected areas. This meeting represents the second round of such inter-state engagements, building on an earlier consultation held in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district.
Kamrup District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating, “Kamrup district shares its boundary with Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi and West Khasi Hills districts, making joint coordination critical for the smooth conduct of elections.” He pointed out that 15 polling stations lie in the border belt, including key locations such as Lumpi, Gamerimura, and Ukiam, spread across the Boko-Chaygaon and Palashbari Assembly constituencies.
West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak emphasized the value of ongoing efforts, noting, “Such periodic coordination exercises have historically contributed to maintaining peace during elections in the region.” He reaffirmed Meghalaya’s full support for Assam’s electoral process and requested the sharing of movement plans for polling personnel and materials to enable better alignment with local police units.
The discussions centered on seamless voting procedures, strengthened security deployments, and logistical support for electors in geographically challenging zones. Both sides committed to synchronized security arrangements to prevent disruptions and ensure that voters in border villages can exercise their franchise without hindrance.
Officials from Assam included Kamrup Senior Superintendent of Police Subhashish Baruah and other senior administrative officers, while Meghalaya was represented by West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor and additional key personnel.
This enhanced cooperation comes amid broader security preparations for the Assam polls, underscoring the states’ shared commitment to maintaining law and order in disputed or sensitive border regions. By addressing potential challenges early, the authorities aim to uphold democratic processes and promote regional stability ahead of the elections.
