Congress Lok Sabha Deputy Leader and Assam unit heavyweight Gaurav Gogoi has openly voiced disappointment and a sense of helplessness regarding the slow progress and persistent hurdles in finalising seat-sharing and alliance arrangements within the INDIA bloc for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Gogoi acknowledged that he had initially been optimistic about the opposition coalition coming together effectively against the BJP-led NDA. However, he admitted that repeated delays, conflicting demands, and lack of clarity from alliance partners have left him feeling increasingly pessimistic.
Key excerpts from his interaction:
- “I was positive earlier… I genuinely believed that all like-minded parties would come together with a clear understanding and a shared goal of defeating the BJP.”
- “But now I feel a bit helpless. Talks keep dragging on, new conditions keep coming up, and we are losing precious time that should be used for booth-level preparation and public outreach.”
- “Voters in Assam want to see a strong, united alternative. If the alliance partners cannot sort out seat-sharing quickly, it sends a very wrong message to the people.”
Gogoi refrained from directly naming any specific party or leader for the deadlock but made it clear that the current state of negotiations is “not healthy” for the opposition’s prospects. He stressed that Congress has shown flexibility on several seats but expects reciprocity and seriousness from other constituents.
The statement comes amid ongoing friction within the INDIA bloc in Assam, particularly over key constituencies in Lower Assam and Barak Valley, where regional players and Congress have overlapping claims. Raijor Dal, AJP, and other smaller parties have been pushing for a larger share of winnable seats, while Congress cadre in many areas are resisting any major concessions.
Gogoi’s candid admission of feeling “helpless” is being seen as an indication of the mounting pressure on the Congress leadership — both at the state and central level — to either force a breakthrough soon or prepare to go solo in a significant number of seats.
The Assam Assembly elections are expected in March–April 2026, and with the NDA already moving toward finalising its seat-sharing formula by mid-March, the opposition’s continued indecision could prove costly in terms of campaign momentum and voter perception.
