Delhi Police have arrested a couple in connection with the alleged racial harassment and verbal abuse of two women from Arunachal Pradesh in the national capital. The incident, which was captured on video and went viral, drew sharp condemnation from political leaders, including Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who had publicly demanded swift action.
According to police sources, the accused — a man and woman — were identified through CCTV footage, witness statements, and digital evidence gathered from the location of the incident. The couple has been taken into custody, and a detailed interrogation is underway to establish the full sequence of events and motive.
The FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including provisions for criminal intimidation, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and acts intended to outrage religious feelings or insult the modesty of a woman. Authorities are also examining whether provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act apply, given the racial nature of the slurs targeting the victims’ northeastern identity.
The victims, both young women from Arunachal Pradesh residing in Delhi, were reportedly subjected to derogatory comments about their appearance, ethnicity, and origin while in a public place. The viral video showed the couple using offensive language and behaving aggressively before bystanders intervened.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had earlier condemned the incident in strong terms, calling it “shameful” and urging Delhi Police to act without delay. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and several northeastern student organisations also expressed outrage, demanding exemplary punishment and stronger safeguards for people from the region living in other parts of the country.
Delhi Police Commissioner has assured that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness and that the investigation will be completed expeditiously. The arrested individuals are expected to be produced before a magistrate soon.
This development comes amid renewed calls for nationwide awareness campaigns, sensitivity training for law enforcement, and stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination laws to protect citizens from racial bias and hate crimes.
