Union Minister of Civil Aviation and prominent BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia has sharply condemned the alleged racial harassment and verbal abuse faced by two women from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi, calling it unacceptable and a direct assault on the dignity of Northeast citizens.
The incident reportedly occurred in a public place in the national capital, where the women were subjected to derogatory racial slurs and discriminatory remarks targeting their appearance and origin. A video clip of the confrontation went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage across Arunachal Pradesh and other northeastern states.
In a strongly worded statement posted on X, Scindia wrote:
“The shameful racial harassment of our sisters from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi is completely unacceptable. Every Indian, especially from the Northeast, must be treated with respect and dignity — anywhere in the country. I stand in solidarity with them and demand swift, strict action against the perpetrators. Delhi Police must act immediately and ensure justice is delivered without delay.”
Scindia further appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Delhi Police Commissioner to take cognizance of the matter, register an FIR under appropriate sections including those related to racial discrimination, criminal intimidation, and causing hurt to sentiments, and ensure exemplary punishment for those responsible.
The minister’s intervention has been widely appreciated in Arunachal Pradesh, where political leaders, student bodies, and civil society groups have long raised concerns about the persistent racial bias and discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in metropolitan cities.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also echoed similar sentiments earlier, urging central authorities to treat such cases with utmost seriousness and ensure foolproof protection for northeastern citizens living or studying outside the region.
This latest episode has once again brought national attention to the need for stronger awareness campaigns, stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination laws, and greater sensitivity toward the cultural and ethnic diversity of India’s northeastern states.
Police sources in Delhi confirmed that a complaint has been received and an investigation is underway. Updates on arrests or further legal proceedings are awaited.
