A high-level delegation from the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), joined by representatives from the Arunachal Democratic Party (ADP) and the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA), held a crucial meeting with All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge at his New Delhi residence. The group submitted a detailed memorandum outlining pressing challenges facing Arunachal Pradesh, seeking urgent national-level intervention.
Led by APCC President Bosiram Siram and APCC In-Charge for Arunachal Pradesh Dr. A. Chellakumar, the delegation featured ADP President Tami Pangu, General Secretary Kipa Natung, and PPA Vice President Kaling Jerang. Their discussions centered on several vital issues impacting the state’s governance, environment, and tribal rights.
Key demands in the memorandum included an amendment to Article 371(H) of the Constitution to enhance constitutional protections and grant greater autonomy to Arunachal Pradesh. The group expressed apprehensions about the Forest Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2023, highlighting its potential adverse effects on local ecosystems and communities. They also addressed the environmental and socio-economic repercussions of large-scale dam projects in the region.
Additionally, the delegation spotlighted alleged irregularities in the Lada-Sarli Frontier Highway compensation process and the overall execution of the Arunachal Frontier Highway project. APCC President Siram pointed out that the highway, initially designed as a strategic defense route along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to improve border infrastructure and military logistics, has deviated in certain sections. Instead of hugging the frontier, the current alignment reportedly traverses villages and areas nearer to administrative hubs.
Siram further alleged discrepancies in land compensation for the Lada-Sarli segment, urging full transparency in acquisition records, public revelation of compensation details, and an impartial investigation to ensure accountability.
AICC President Kharge responded positively, acknowledging the validity of the concerns and committing to provide necessary assistance in advocating these matters through appropriate channels.
This collaborative effort by opposition parties underscores growing calls for reforms to safeguard Arunachal Pradesh’s unique tribal heritage, strategic interests, and sustainable development in Northeast India.
