In a significant development toward ending insurgency in Arunachal Pradesh’s eastern frontier, a cadre from the NSCN (Akato) faction has voluntarily laid down arms and surrendered to security forces in Tirap district.
The militant, identified as SS Lieutenant Wangkhu Lowang (32), son of Wangdiap Lowang from Moktowa village under Dadam police station, formally surrendered at Khonsa. The handover took place in the presence of Tirap Police, personnel from the 44th Assam Rifles, and the 36th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
During the surrender ceremony, Lowang deposited one 7.65 mm pistol (made in Kachin, registration number 4702), along with one magazine and six live rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition.
This surrender is viewed as a major success for the sustained persuasion and rehabilitation campaigns conducted by security agencies in the region. Tirap district, long affected by factional militant activities, has seen several cadres from various NSCN groups returning to the mainstream in recent years.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to providing a dignified path for former insurgents through rehabilitation packages, skill development programs, and reintegration support under government policies aimed at lasting peace and development in the Northeast.
The incident further weakens the operational strength of remaining militant elements and reinforces the message that voluntary surrender offers a better future compared to continued armed struggle.
Security forces continue to maintain vigilance while encouraging other cadres still in the jungles to lay down arms and join the peace process.
