The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has strongly refuted claims by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accusing Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi of having ties to Pakistan, labeling the accusations as entirely unfounded and a desperate tactic to divert public attention.
APCC President Bosiram Siram addressed the media, asserting that the allegations against the Lok Sabha’s Deputy Leader of Opposition are “completely false” and lack any credible evidence. He described them as “baseless, unfounded, and without proof,” suggesting they stem from the ruling party’s anxiety amid rising opposition momentum. Siram argued that such personal smears and inflammatory remarks only reveal the government’s vulnerability, and no amount of unsubstantiated rhetoric can tarnish a national figure without solid backing.
According to Siram, these charges are a calculated effort to mislead the populace during a period of intense scrutiny on the administration. He emphasized that public opinion remains unshaken by attempts to portray opposition leaders as disloyal without factual support.
The controversy arose following Sarma’s recent press meet in Guwahati, where he suggested a “deeper connection” involving Gogoi, his British spouse Elizabeth Colburn, and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Sarma alleged that sensitive Intelligence Bureau data was leaked to a neighboring nation and raised concerns over foreign funding violations, including payments to Colburn during her time in India.
Additionally, the Assam CM claimed Gogoi made a secretive trip to Pakistan in 2013, possibly for “some kind of training,” and challenged him to reveal details or risk facing treason charges. Sarma framed the issue as part of a larger “international conspiracy.”
In retaliation, Gaurav Gogoi, who also heads the Assam Congress, ridiculed the Chief Minister’s statements as “worse than a C-grade movie” and a total “super flop,” dismissing them outright.
This exchange highlights escalating political rivalries in the Northeast, with opposition parties accusing the ruling coalition of resorting to smear campaigns to undermine credible challengers ahead of potential electoral battles.
