Arunachal Pradesh Widow Accuses Forest Department of Negligence in Fatal Tiger Attack on Head Constable

In a heartbreaking case highlighting escalating human-wildlife conflicts in Arunachal Pradesh, the widow of a head constable who lost his life to a tiger mauling has leveled serious allegations against the Forest Department. She claims that repeated alerts about the animal’s presence were dismissed, leading to the preventable tragedy in the Lower Dibang Valley district.

Khyoda Mary, spouse of the deceased Head Constable Chikseng Manpang, revealed that community members and local officials had flagged tiger sightings in the Mayudia region for almost two months before the deadly encounter. Despite these warnings, no substantial steps were implemented to mitigate risks or enhance safety, according to her. This oversight, she argues, directly contributed to her husband’s untimely death during a routine patrol.

Overwhelmed by grief and frustration at what she describes as systemic indifference, Mary has turned down the ₹10 lakh compensation offered by the authorities. She insists that monetary aid falls short of addressing the profound loss and instead urges for comprehensive, ongoing assistance to secure her children’s future, including provisions for their schooling, protection, and general well-being.

By holding the Forest Department responsible, Mary is pushing for urgent reforms in wildlife management strategies, especially in zones susceptible to such encounters. Her demands underscore the pressing need for proactive measures, improved monitoring, and robust protocols to safeguard both residents and frontline workers in India’s biodiversity-rich Northeast.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the growing challenges posed by human-animal interactions in remote areas, prompting calls for greater accountability and investment in conflict resolution initiatives across Arunachal Pradesh.
