Assam Cabinet Transfers Investigation into Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s Alleged Pakistan Connections to Union Home Ministry

In a significant move highlighting national security priorities, the Assam Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has resolved to escalate the probe into Congress parliamentarian Gaurav Gogoi’s purported ties with Pakistan to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This decision stems from an in-depth review of findings by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), emphasizing that the matter transcends state-level capabilities and requires central intervention.

During a media briefing, Chief Minister Sarma explained that the SIT, initially formed to examine the case linked to an individual named Ali Tauqeer, gathered critical evidence from various sources. However, the team determined that advancing the inquiry would necessitate international collaboration, such as through Interpol, along with access to restricted data managed by the central government and parliamentary bodies. “Given these constraints, the Cabinet has chosen to align fully with MHA guidance,” Sarma stated, noting that the ministry will designate the appropriate central agency to assume control, after which Assam will officially hand over the case.

The Chief Minister further announced plans for a comprehensive update on the investigation’s progress and key revelations during a scheduled address at 10:30 AM on Sunday. He reiterated that the focus remains firmly on safeguarding national interests, with any political angles taking a backseat.

Addressing specifics, Sarma referenced a 2012 trip by Gaurav Gogoi to Pakistan, pointing out that neither the Assam Police nor the state’s Special Branch was notified in advance. Additionally, he claimed the Indian government lacked prior awareness of the visit. Drawing a parallel, Sarma remarked, “If my own son planned a trip to Pakistan, I would notify the External Affairs Minister—that’s standard procedure.” He added that even routine family travels are typically reported through official protocols.

Sarma underscored the broader ramifications of the issue, which extend far beyond regional boundaries, justifying the transfer to the MHA for a thorough examination driven purely by security imperatives.

In an unrelated announcement, the Chief Minister revealed that Assam Police will initiate a suo motu case against Congress leader and ex-APCC president Bhupen Bora over claims of inappropriate conduct at a public event. He has instructed the Director General of Police to handle the matter expeditiously and in full compliance with legal standards, free from any outside interference.

This development reflects Assam’s proactive stance on addressing potential threats to national security while maintaining transparency in high-profile investigations.
