Assam Section Fast-Tracked • Bengal Portion Facing Major Land Acquisition Problems
Kokrajhar / Guwahati — The much-awaited rail connectivity between Kokrajhar (Assam) and Gelephu (Bhutan) is expected to become operational within the next 2.5 to 3 years, with very fast progress being made on the Indian side.
According to the latest update from senior railway officials, the Assam portion of the project is moving at a very good pace, while the Bengal stretch (especially the difficult land acquisition part) is currently the biggest bottleneck.
Current Status at a Glance
| Section | Length | Status | Expected Completion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kokrajhar – Bangladesh border (Assam part) | ~52 km | Very fast progress • Land mostly acquired | 2028–29 (most likely) |
| Bangladesh border – Gelephu (via Cooch Behar) | ~45–50 km | Land acquisition facing serious hurdles | Delayed / uncertain |
| Total Project | ~100 km | Assam side fast • Bengal side slow | Likely 2028–29 |
Why Assam Side is Moving Fast
- Almost entire land required has already been handed over
- Most major bridges & major civil structures work already started
- Very good coordination between state government & Northeast Frontier Railway
- Strong political push from Assam government
Main Problems in West Bengal Portion
- Very serious difficulty in land acquisition
- Many farmers not agreeing to compensation rates
- Some places facing strong local resistance
- Multiple layers of land ownership documents creating legal complications
- Coordination between state & central agencies comparatively slower
Strategic & Economic Importance
Once completed, this rail link will:
- Give India direct rail access to Gelephu Special Administrative Region (Bhutan’s big economic hub project)
- Open new trade route with Bhutan
- Reduce load on existing Siliguri corridor
- Bring huge economic benefit to entire Bodoland region & lower Assam
- Strengthen Act East Policy connectivity
Senior officials associated with the project are optimistic that even if the Bengal side takes a little more time, the Assam portion can be commissioned first as an internal section, and later connected when the remaining part is ready.
Bottom line (as per current realistic assessment): Kokrajhar–Gelephu rail link most probably by 2028–29 (Assam side almost ready to race • Bengal land acquisition remains the real challenge)
