Arunachal Police Seize Heroin Worth ₹25 Lakh in Namsai; One Arrested in Major Anti-Drug Strike

In a significant blow to narcotics trafficking in eastern Arunachal Pradesh, Namsai Police intercepted a consignment of heroin weighing 309 grams (including container) with an estimated street value of ₹25 lakh during a late-night operation on Friday. One suspect has been arrested, and investigations are underway to dismantle the larger supply chain.

The seizure took place near the Mahadevpur check gate under the jurisdiction of Mahadevpur Police Station. Acting on specific intelligence, a team led by SDPO Namsai O. Perme and OC Mahadevpur PS Inspector T. Gao established a naka (checkpoint) and flagged down a suspicious Alto car (registration AS-23-AC-7940) travelling from Arunachal towards Assam.

Upon search, police recovered 25 soap cases containing the contraband hidden inside the vehicle. The accused, identified as Md. Raju Ahmed (32), son of Md. Abdul Rashid and resident of Laluk, Lakhimpur, Assam, was immediately taken into custody.

Case Details

  • FIR: Mahadevpur PS Case No. 48/2025
  • Sections: 21(b)/29 NDPS Act
  • Seized items: 309 grams heroin, Alto car, cash ₹2,500, and one mobile phone
  • Estimated market value: ₹25 lakh

The accused has been remanded to police custody for further interrogation to uncover the source, destination, and possible local linkages of the drug network.

Official Response

Namsai SP Dr. DW Thongon, IPS, commended the team’s vigilance, stating:

“This seizure is part of our intensified anti-drug campaign along the Assam-Arunachal corridor. We are committed to making Namsai and the entire eastern region drug-free through intelligence-based operations and community cooperation.”

Authorities have appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity related to narcotics trafficking, assuring strict confidentiality and swift action.

Broader Context

The incident highlights the persistent challenge of heroin smuggling through Arunachal’s porous borders with Assam and Myanmar. Namsai and neighbouring districts have witnessed a surge in drug-related arrests in recent months, prompting heightened surveillance and joint operations with Assam Police.

This major haul reinforces Arunachal Police’s zero-tolerance stance against the drug menace, sending a strong message to traffickers operating in the region.
