In a significant crackdown on drug smuggling, the Itanagar Capital Police intercepted a suspect and confiscated approximately 2.2 kg of suspected cannabis during a targeted checkpoint operation near Chandranagar, underscoring the force’s resolve to dismantle narcotics networks in Arunachal Pradesh’s capital region.
The operation, initiated on November 27 based on actionable intelligence from a trusted source, aimed to intercept the illicit transport of narcotic substances from Hollongi towards Itanagar. A dedicated police team established a strategic naka (checkpoint) near Hotel Obsidian Blue, where they flagged down a suspicious scooter for inspection.
Seizure and Arrest
During the search, officers recovered 2,216 grams of suspected cannabis concealed in four black polythene bags from the scooter’s boot space. Additional items seized included ₹600 in cash, believed to be linked to the transaction, and the vehicle itself – a scooter bearing registration number AR-01N-9206.
The prime suspect, Santosh Biswas (son of Madhu Biswas), was apprehended on the spot without resistance. The entire procedure was meticulously documented in compliance with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, in the presence of independent witnesses, including Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Itanagar Shri Tamo Dada, to ensure procedural integrity and transparency.
A case has been registered against Biswas under Sections 20(b)(ii)(B), 25, and 29 of the NDPS Act. He has been remanded to District Jail, Jully, for judicial custody, with investigations underway to uncover potential accomplices and broader trafficking links.
Police Team and Coordination
The operation was spearheaded by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Itanagar Shri Kengo Dirchi, with on-ground execution by Inspector Khiksi Yangfo, Sub-Inspectors Padam Padi and Tana Suraj, and Constables Jumli Zirdo, Sandeep Yadav, Shankar Nampe, Koj Tani, and Robi Singh. The team received crucial support from the Police Ajin Team of Ward No. 10 under the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC).
Police officials commended the seamless inter-agency collaboration and the pivotal role of community-sourced intelligence in the success of the raid.
Commitment to a Drug-Free Capital
This seizure reinforces the Itanagar Police’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking, which continues to threaten public health and youth in the region. Authorities have reiterated their dedication to leveraging intelligence-driven strategies and fostering public partnerships to create safer communities.
“We remain committed to eradicating narcotics from our streets through vigilant enforcement and community vigilance. Citizens are urged to report suspicious activities promptly,” a senior police spokesperson stated.
As probes continue, the incident highlights the persistent challenge of cross-border smuggling routes in Arunachal Pradesh, with law enforcement vowing intensified surveillance to prevent recurrence.
