Arunachal Forms High-Powered Panel to Scrutinize Draft Freedom of Religion Act Rules

Retired Justice Brojendra Prasad Katakey Chairs Diverse Committee to Ensure Constitutional Compliance and Community Balance

The Arunachal Pradesh government has established a High-Powered Committee to meticulously review the draft rules under the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978, aiming to foster harmony while upholding legal and cultural sensitivities. This strategic initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Indigenous Affairs, replaces a prior directive and reflects the administration’s proactive approach to refining policies that resonate with the state’s multicultural ethos.

At the helm is retired Justice Brojendra Prasad Katakey, whose judicial expertise will guide a balanced evaluation of the proposed framework. The panel draws together a broad coalition of stakeholders, including senior bureaucrats, ministers, and voices from key religious and indigenous bodies such as the Arunachal Christian Forum, Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh, Monpa Mimang Tsogpa, Tai Khamti Development Society, Arunachal Vikas Parishad, and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Arunachal Pradesh chapter. This inclusive composition ensures diverse perspectives shape recommendations that honor the state’s rich tapestry of traditions.

The committee’s core mission involves dissecting the draft in alignment with High Court observations and constitutional tenets, proposing refinements where needed, engaging relevant agencies and specialists, and delivering a comprehensive report with actionable insights. By prioritizing stakeholder consultations, the group seeks to craft rules that safeguard religious freedoms while preventing coercion, promoting a framework that strengthens communal bonds and legal integrity.

This forward-looking step highlights Arunachal’s dedication to equitable governance, where policy evolves through dialogue to support indigenous rights and interfaith respect. As the review progresses, it positions the state as a model for sensitive legislative adaptation in India’s diverse Northeast landscape.
