In a transparent push for inclusive local leadership, the West Kameng District Election Office orchestrated a lottery system to designate one-third of seats for female candidates across key panchayat bodies, held at the lively Kameng Club in Bomdila.
Guided by Dechin Doka, the District Panchayat Development Officer doubling as In-Charge District Election Officer, the session meticulously followed guidelines from the Arunachal Pradesh Panchayati Raj Act of 1997 and its 2018 amendments on constituency mapping and seat allocations. Doka walked attendees through the step-by-step protocols, ensuring clarity and fairness in every draw.
The gathering buzzed with participation from subdivision administrators, spokespeople for major political outfits, Panchayati Raj Institution leaders, elders, rural folks, and everyday residents, all underscoring a collective commitment to open processes.
Among the 13 Zilla Parishad Member positions up for grabs, four spots—Thembang, Dirang, Thrizino, and Jerigaon—were earmarked for women contenders. The exercise extended to pinpointing reserved slots for 110 Gram Panchayat Chairperson roles and 503 Gram Panchayat Member seats throughout the district, broadening opportunities at the village level.
This initiative heralds a bold stride in amplifying women’s voices within community decision-making, fortifying the foundations of decentralized governance as Arunachal Pradesh gears up for its next round of panchayat polls.
