Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) KT Parnaik has called for the adoption of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite monitoring, to protect the state’s reserve forests and preserve its rich biodiversity. Speaking at a high-level meeting with forest department officials at Raj Bhavan, the governor emphasized proactive measures to maintain Arunachal’s status as a “Green State.”
Parnaik advocated for regular surveillance using AI tools and satellite mapping, proposing collaboration with the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NE-SAC) in Shillong to enhance forest monitoring and data automation. Drawing inspiration from his recent visit to Gujarat’s Gir Forest, he urged the adoption of scientific conservation strategies tailored to Arunachal’s unique ecosystem.
The governor stressed the need for stricter enforcement against encroachments, suggesting eviction over compensation to deter illegal activities in forest areas. He also called for improved inter-departmental coordination and timely environmental clearances to balance conservation with developmental goals under the “Viksit Arunachal” mission.
Highlighting the aesthetic and ecological value of the state’s capital, Parnaik proposed a massive plantation drive along the Hollongi Airport to Itanagar route, aiming to create a green corridor that welcomes visitors. The initiative aligns with efforts to enhance Arunachal’s appeal as a biodiversity hotspot and a sustainable tourism destination.
Forest department officials briefed the governor on ongoing conservation efforts, including afforestation and wildlife protection programs. Parnaik reiterated the importance of community involvement and technological innovation to ensure the long-term protection of Arunachal’s forests, which cover over 60,000 square kilometers and harbor thousands of plant and animal species.
