– Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled ambitious plans to enhance the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Golaghat district, by integrating public-oriented facilities such as a school, medical training center, and a stadium. The announcement came during the inauguration of the academy’s first phase by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the state’s law enforcement and community development efforts.
The expanded vision for the academy, named after the revered Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, aims to serve not only police personnel but also the broader public. Addressing attendees, Sarma outlined plans for a CBSE-affiliated school, nursing and medical training centers, and a stadium modeled after Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium. “These additions will benefit both the Assam Police and the people of Golaghat, fostering education, healthcare skills, and sports opportunities,” he stated.
The first phase of the academy, inaugurated today, spans 340 acres and has been developed at a cost of Rs 167.4 crore as part of a Rs 1,024 crore two-phase modernization project. It features cutting-edge infrastructure, including smart classrooms, a weapon simulator, research labs, a museum, and a parade ground, designed to provide comprehensive training to police recruits. Sarma emphasized that the weapon simulator aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s SMART policing initiative, preparing officers for real-world scenarios safely and efficiently.
Expressing gratitude to Amit Shah, Sarma hailed the academy as a “golden milestone” for Assam Police and the state, crediting the Union Home Minister’s support for its transformation into a premier training hub. The event was attended by Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita, alongside senior police officials, highlighting its significance for the region.
Sarma also revealed plans for a potential police medical college in Dergaon, underscoring the government’s commitment to blending security advancements with public welfare. “This institute honors Lachit Barphukan’s legacy while driving progress for Assam,” he added, noting improvements in law and order that have attracted over Rs 5 lakh crore in investment proposals.
The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy’s expansion reflects Assam’s dual focus on strengthening policing standards and uplifting community infrastructure, positioning it as a model for development in Northeast India.
