Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced plans to initiate discussions with Assam authorities to resolve the ongoing border dispute in Changlang district. The announcement comes amid rising tensions over territorial claims that have long strained relations between the two northeastern states.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, CM Khandu emphasized the need for a peaceful and cooperative approach to settle the matter. “We are committed to finding a lasting solution through dialogue. I will soon engage with my counterpart in Assam to address the concerns of people living along the Changlang border,” he said.
The dispute centers around areas near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary, where overlapping claims have led to periodic disagreements. Local residents in Changlang have expressed frustration over the lack of clarity, which has affected land ownership and access to resources. Both states have historically relied on negotiations to manage such conflicts, but a permanent resolution remains elusive.
Officials from Arunachal Pradesh have indicated that the state government is preparing a detailed proposal to present during the talks. The proposal is expected to focus on mutual cooperation and respect for historical agreements, while also addressing the needs of border communities.
The initiative has been welcomed by local leaders in Changlang, who see it as a step toward reducing tensions. “This is a positive move. People here want peace and certainty,” said a community representative.
Assam’s response to the proposed talks is awaited, but analysts believe that both states could benefit from a collaborative effort to demarcate the boundary clearly. The central government may also play a role in facilitating the discussions, given the sensitivity of interstate border issues in the region.
As the date for the meeting is yet to be finalized, all eyes are on the two chief ministers to steer this long-standing issue toward a resolution that ensures harmony and development for the people of Changlang and beyond.
