A 12-hour bandh called by the Bogong Banggo Yameng Kebang (BBYK) along with eight youth and student organisations passed off peacefully across Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district on Tuesday.
The bandh was called over the Education Department’s ongoing teacher transfer and rationalisation exercise, which the organisations have been opposing.
Peaceful observance
According to reports, the dawn-to-dusk shutdown was observed peacefully across the district, with shops and business establishments remaining closed and public transport largely off the roads. No untoward incident was reported during the bandh hours.
The organisations have argued that the transfer and rationalisation drive has affected the functioning of schools in the district and demanded a rethink of the exercise.
What is rationalisation?
Teacher rationalisation is the process of redistributing teaching staff across schools to correct imbalances — moving teachers from schools with surplus staff to those facing shortages. While the department says the move improves learning outcomes, student bodies have often opposed it on the ground that it disrupts familiar teacher-student equations mid-session.
The state government is yet to issue an official response to the bandh call.
