Gagan Paul had come a long way — literally and figuratively. A final-year agricultural engineering student at the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), he had left his home in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, to build a future in the Northeast. But in the early hours of Thursday, August 28, a single, devastating moment on National Highway 415 ended everything. His gearless scooter slammed into a road divider in Papum Pare district, and Gagan never made it back.
How the Night Unfolded
It was around 4:30 in the morning — the kind of hour when most of us are fast asleep — when a police team conducting routine checking near Nirjuli Police Station stumbled upon a young man lying injured on the road. They didn’t hesitate. ICR Naharlagun Additional Superintendent of Police Rishi Longdo confirmed that the team immediately rushed to the spot and found Paul in a critical condition after his two-wheeler had hit the highway divider. There were no witnesses, no one to call for help. Just a boy, alone, on a dark stretch of road.
The police loaded him into their vehicle and drove him to the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun. But it was too late. The attending doctor declared him dead on arrival.
