India’s political battleground just moved to the river. And things are getting splashy.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is not one to take a jab lying down — or, apparently, floating. After posting a video of himself swimming in a river in Arunachal Pradesh, Rijiju found himself at the receiving end of some sharp sarcasm from Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera. What followed was a very public exchange that was equal parts political mud-slinging and unintentional comedy.
The Video That Started It All
On Sunday, Rijiju shared a clip of himself taking a swim in one of Arunachal Pradesh’s rivers, speaking about how navigating the state’s fast-flowing currents had been a part of his life since childhood. He even used the moment to issue a gentle public safety warning, urging people not to enter deep waters unless they know how to swim — several lives have been lost in those rivers. A wholesome moment, by any measure. Or so he thought.
Khera Takes the Bait — and Bites
Congress leader Pawan Khera had other ideas. Taking to X, Khera suggested that Rijiju’s swimming video was essentially proof of how deeply Rahul Gandhi had gotten under the BJP’s skin. His phrasing was pointed: he argued that Rijiju couldn’t even take a riverside dip without dragging Gandhi into the picture. The dig landed. Hard.
It’s the kind of political trolling that social media was practically built for. Short, sharp, and impossible to ignore.
Rijiju Comes Up Swinging
Rijiju didn’t let it pass. On August 25, he fired back on X — calling Khera’s comment “indecent” and accusing him of conduct unbecoming of a parliamentarian. Then came the threat that really turned heads. “Dear Pawan Khera, I’ll report to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma about your indiscipline conduct if you talk about half-naked swimming,” Rijiju wrote. Nobody was expecting Assam’s Chief Minister to get dragged into a swimming dispute, and yet, here we are.
Rijiju also went on to clear the air about his motivations. “I swim with my villagers to inspire my people and followers,” he said, firmly rejecting any suggestion that his swim had anything to do with Rahul Gandhi. “Rahul doesn’t exist in my mind when I’m with my people,” the minister added. He also called himself a “natural khiladi” in Arunachal’s rivers — and honestly, that’s a title nobody seemed to dispute.
Part of a Bigger Fitness Feud
This latest exchange adds another chapter to the ongoing fitness-related sparring between Rijiju and Gandhi, which has previously spilled into discussions about exercise and jiu-jitsu. Both sides seem more than happy to keep fighting this battle — just on different terrain.
Whether it’s a gym floor, a river bank, or a wrestling mat, Indian politics has found a remarkably athletic new arena. One thing’s for sure: Kiren Rijiju can take a punch, return it with interest, and still find time to swim upstream. Literally.
