The skies over Arunachal Pradesh are not done yet — and the India Meteorological Department wants everyone to know it.
The Alert Is Real, and So Is the Danger
On August 4, the IMD issued an orange alert for parts of Arunachal Pradesh, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next two days. Papum Pare district is forecast to bear the worst of it — very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning are expected on Tuesday itself. East Kameng is not far behind, with heavy rain and thunderstorms on the cards. Several other districts have been placed under yellow watches, a level that still demands caution even if it sounds less dramatic. An orange alert isn’t something you brush off. It means be ready, not just be aware.
A State Already on Its Knees
What makes this warning especially heavy — beyond the rainfall figures — is the ground reality it lands on. Arunachal Pradesh is already deep in crisis. Seven people have died. Over 1,55,850 people have been affected by floods and landslides unleashed by the monsoon this season. The devastation has reached 674 villages spread across 382 circles in 28 districts. That’s not just numbers on a damage report — that’s entire communities watching the rains tear through their homes, their farms, their lives. And now, more rain is coming.
What the Next Few Days Look Like
The IMD does offer some relief ahead. Rainfall activity is expected to ease on Wednesday, August 5, with yellow watches continuing for Papum Pare but no major warnings for most of the state. From Thursday onward, the weather outlook improves significantly — only a handful of western districts are likely to remain under yellow alerts for isolated rain spells. Friday looks largely calm. For people who have been living through weeks of this, Thursday cannot come soon enough.
What Authorities Are Saying
The State Disaster Management Department has stepped in with urgent advisories. Residents are being told to avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone, waterlogged and landslide-prone areas. Commuters should check road conditions before heading out and stay away from flooded roads, underpasses, and fast-moving streams. People are also advised to keep away from riverbanks, secure loose objects outdoors, stock up on emergency supplies, and keep their phones fully charged. Farmers have a specific warning too — protect crops, livestock, harvested produce, and farm equipment from waterlogging and heavy rain.
The monsoon season in Arunachal has never been gentle — but this year feels different. When more than a lakh and a half people are already displaced and the rain refuses to pause, the only responsible thing left is to listen to the warnings, act fast, and look out for each other.
