When the waters rose and the roads turned to rivers, the Adi Baptist Union didn’t wait for someone else to act.
While floods continue to batter parts of Arunachal Pradesh, the Adi Baptist Union (ABU) — a religious organisation based in Pasighat, East Siang district — stepped in and delivered relief to more than 140 flood-affected households across Lower Siang and East Siang districts. It’s the kind of ground-level response that government machinery often struggles to match.
Fifteen Villages, Two Days, One Mission
The relief operation was carried out on 31 July and 1 August, covering 15 villages across two districts. In Lower Siang, the ABU team reached families in Koyu circle — including the villages of Koyu, Kadu, Rote, and Tabiripo, along with several nearby settlements. Families in Ledum, Korang, Sido, and other villages in East Siang district were also covered. Getting to some of these flood-hit villages couldn’t have been easy — the terrain in Siang during monsoon is nothing short of brutal — but the team pressed on regardless.
Led From the Front
The initiative was steered by ABU executive secretary Rev Besing Ering and ABU president Maktil Apum, who oversaw the distribution on the ground. The assistance wasn’t just material. Along with financial support, the ABU team offered prayers for each affected family — seeking comfort, strength, and hope for people who had lost a great deal in a very short time. That human touch matters more than it sometimes gets credit for in disaster relief.
A Community Funding a Community
What makes this relief effort stand out is how the funds were raised. The ABU didn’t rely on corporate donors or government grants. The relief money came directly from contributions made by members and well-wishers across its ten pastorate circles. Ordinary people pitching in for other ordinary people. That’s community solidarity in its most honest form, and the ABU acknowledged every contributor with genuine gratitude.
A Commitment That Goes Beyond a Single Relief Camp
The ABU has reaffirmed that this isn’t a one-time response. The organisation has stated its continued commitment to serving communities during times of need — and given the monsoon season still has weeks ahead of it, that pledge may be tested again soon. Floods in the Siang belt are rarely a one-and-done situation.
What the ABU did in those two days across fifteen battered villages is a reminder that relief doesn’t always come in the form of official orders and government vehicles. Sometimes, it arrives with prayer and a quiet determination to show up — even when the road underwater says otherwise.
