When a sitting MP calls the country’s youth “Generation Gutter,” she shouldn’t be surprised when the streets answer back.
On July 30, the Arunachal Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (APMCC) turned up at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan in Itanagar with one clear message — enough is enough. Workers gathered, voices rose, and an effigy of BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut went up in flames. All of it sparked by a remark that many across India found not just offensive, but deeply irresponsible from someone holding elected office.
What Did Kangana Actually Say?
Ranaut, the Mandi MP, had reportedly described young protesters — students demanding answers over alleged NEET paper leaks and irregularities in competitive examinations — as “Generation Gutter.” She also reportedly questioned who was “birthing and raising them.” It’s the kind of statement that would be hard to defend in any forum, let alone from a platform in Parliament. Predictably, it triggered a wave of outrage from political parties, student groups, and social media users across the country. Arunachal was no exception.
Itanagar Takes a Stand
The protest was led by APMCC president Chukhu Nachi, who didn’t hold back. She accused Ranaut of choosing to insult students, unemployed youth, and their families at a time when they needed their representatives to actually represent them. “The youth of India are not the problem,” Nachi told reporters. “The real problem is the failure of the BJP government to protect the integrity of the country’s examination system. Students demanding accountability cannot be branded as a useless generation.” It was a pointed, measured response — and it landed.
What’s striking here is that this isn’t just political point-scoring. These students are sitting for examinations that determine their careers, their futures, their entire trajectories. When a system fails them and they speak up, being called “gutter” in return is a gut punch that goes beyond politics.
The Demand: A Public Apology, No Conditions
The APMCC made their demands crystal clear — Kangana Ranaut must issue an unconditional public apology to students, youth, and parents across India. Nachi also called on student organisations, women’s groups, and civil society bodies to stand together in defending what she described as the dignity and democratic rights of young people. The Congress asserted that no elected representative carries the moral authority to humiliate an entire generation that is simply trying to build a better life through education.
A Remark That Won’t Die Down Quietly
There’s something telling about the fact that this protest came from Arunachal Pradesh — thousands of kilometres from Mandi, far from the national media spotlight, yet equally furious. That kind of reach says a lot about how deeply the remark cut. Kangana Ranaut has always courted controversy, but calling India’s youth “Generation Gutter” while they fight a broken examination system may be the one comment that follows her far longer than she expected.
When you insult a generation, don’t be surprised when that generation — and everyone standing with them — refuses to stay silent.
