When floodwaters swept through the Hoj-Dakte villages of Papum Pare, homes were lost and families were left scrambling. Days later, one of Arunachal Pradesh’s most prominent community organisations made sure those families knew they weren’t alone.
A Community Steps Forward
The Nyishi Elite Society (NES) on Tuesday, July 14, donated Rs 5 lakh to support families hit hard by the recent flash floods in Hoj-Dakte villages under Toru Circle in Papum Pare district. It wasn’t a token gesture. In a region where disaster often comes fast and recovery comes slow, this kind of immediate community mobilisation matters more than most people outside the Northeast will ever understand.
The financial assistance was handed over to Papum Pare Deputy Commissioner Lobsang Tsering by an NES delegation led by its General Secretary, Er. Nabam Takar. No fanfare. Just a room, a handshake, and a commitment that cuts through bureaucratic delays.
Words That Actually Meant Something
Commending the district administration for its prompt response to the disaster, Er. Nabam Takar reaffirmed the Society’s commitment to standing with both the administration and the people during times of crisis. That statement might sound like standard speech, but given the scale of suffering in flood-prone Arunachal — where every monsoon season brings fresh devastation — it carried real weight. The Nyishi Elite Society didn’t just send a cheque. They sent leadership.
The Administration’s Promise
Receiving the contribution, DC Lobsang Tsering expressed gratitude to the organisation and assured that the donated amount would be utilised judiciously and transparently for the relief and rehabilitation of the affected families. Transparency in disaster fund utilisation is something people across Northeast India have long demanded and rarely received. The DC’s public assurance here is worth holding on to — and worth holding him to.
The Papum Pare district administration also thanked the Nyishi Elite Society for its generous contribution and lauded its commitment to community service and disaster relief efforts. The acknowledgment is deserved, but credit where it’s also due — to every affected villager still picking up the pieces.
What This Moment Tells Us
Flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh are not a surprise anymore. Every monsoon, the hills give way, rivers rage, and villages bear the cost. What’s less predictable — and more precious — is the speed at which communities respond. The Nyishi Elite Society’s ₹5 lakh donation won’t rebuild everything. But it signals something the government alone rarely does: that the people of this land look after each other.
That, more than any official relief circular, is what disaster survivors remember.
