A 25-year-old woman in Aalo had done everything right. She walked out of what was reportedly an abusive relationship. She separated from her husband. She tried to start over. And she still didn’t make it out alive.
A Killing That Has Shaken West Siang
According to police, the accused — 45-year-old Todak Ngomdir — allegedly killed the woman on Monday before surrendering to authorities the very next day. He is currently in police custody. The couple had separated just about a month before the incident. That single detail says something deeply troubling about the reality women face in this state when they try to leave — the danger doesn’t always end at the door.
APWWS Speaks Out, Refuses to Stay Silent
The West Siang district unit of the Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) has come out in strong condemnation of the killing. The organisation made it clear that no personal grievance, no wounded pride, and no circumstance whatsoever could ever justify taking another person’s life. They have urged investigators to carry out a fair, transparent and time-bound probe — and have committed to closely monitoring the case until it reaches its logical conclusion.
That kind of follow-through matters. Too many cases in this region fade from public memory long before justice is actually delivered.
“Women Cannot Secure Themselves Even After Leaving”
APWWS central executive committee president Jarjum Ete put it plainly — and painfully. She said the entire state needs to wake up to the problem of violence against women and that domestic violence cases must never be quietly brushed aside. She pointed out that in this particular case, the victim faced abuse even after the separation was done. “Women are not able to secure themselves even after coming out of an abusive marriage,” she said. Those words deserve to sit with us for a moment. This woman had already taken the hardest step anyone in her position could take. And it still wasn’t enough to protect her life.
A Demand for Punishment That Sends a Message
Jarjum Ete didn’t stop at condemnation. She called for exemplary punishment — the kind that doesn’t just address one accused, but sends a clear warning to every potential abuser in the state. “Everyone in the society should condemn this,” she said firmly. And she’s right. Cases like this don’t happen in a vacuum. They happen because society, time and again, looks the other way until it’s far too late.
Todak Ngomdir may be in custody. But the real question is whether this case will be pursued with the urgency and accountability that a young woman’s life deserves — or whether it too will slowly fade into just another statistic. Arunachal’s women are watching closely. And this time, they have made it clear they won’t stay quiet.
