₹611 Crore for Arunachal's Roads — Centre Just Made a Big Promise to the Frontier State

Arunachal Pradesh just got a major vote of confidence from New Delhi — and this time, it came with a cheque bigger than what was even asked for.

The Centre has approved 17 road infrastructure projects worth Rs 611.17 crore for Arunachal Pradesh under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) for 2026-27. What makes this particularly noteworthy is that the state had originally proposed projects worth Rs 592.50 crore — the Centre came back with an approval that exceeded the ask. That doesn’t happen every day.

CM Pema Khandu Calls It a Milestone

Chief Minister Pema Khandu broke the news on July 9, calling it another significant milestone in the state’s development journey. Taking to X, Khandu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for the Centre’s continued support. The approval followed a proposal submitted by the Arunachal Pradesh Public Works Department listing 17 priority road projects spread across multiple districts. Anyone who has traveled the roads of this state knows how desperately that kind of investment is needed.

Which Districts Get the Boost?

The projects cover a wide geographical spread, which is actually one of the most encouraging parts of this announcement. East Kameng gets the Ningcho-Langpia road and the Hamba Pinda-Kamsa stretch. Papum Pare sees two new projects — the Hara Happa to Upper Nyorch road and the NH-13 to Hote link. Lower Siang will benefit from the Gengi to Subansiri Ferry Ghat road, while East Siang gets the Mirem to Resing corridor. Districts like Changlang, Longding, Tirap, Lower Dibang Valley, Kamle, West Kameng, and Upper Siang also figure in the approved list. Remote border areas, internal village roads, and key district connections — all of them are part of this package.

Border Areas and Strategic Importance

Several of these roads carry clear strategic value. The NH-513 to Gobuk-Harkam via Herak Army Camp road in Upper Siang, the PMGSY road to Pongchau via Kaila Komnu and Longwo villages in Longding, and the MV Road near the Assam Rifles camp to Miao Singpho village road in Changlang — these aren’t just about convenience. In a state that shares a sensitive international border, good road infrastructure is as much a security matter as it is a development one.

What This Means on the Ground

Officials have stated the projects are expected to ease movement of people and goods, improve access to remote communities, and support the state’s broader economic and strategic goals. That sounds like standard government-speak, and it is — but for the families living in these areas who wait days for supplies after a road washes out, this funding is deeply personal.

Arunachal’s roads have long been its biggest challenge. If these 17 projects are executed well and on time, they won’t just build roads — they’ll rebuild trust.
