A rescue operation in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Dibang Valley district took a dramatic turn when a raft carrying rescuers and stranded individuals overturned in the Sisiri River at Dambuk, leaving one person missing and prompting intensified search efforts by multiple agencies.
Incident During River Rescue Mission
The mishap occurred while a team was attempting to rescue four people stranded in the river. A group of seven rescuers successfully located three of the stranded individuals. However, on the return journey to the riverbank, the raft was hit by a strong current and overturned.
Following the incident, five individuals managed to swim to safety on the riverbank. Five others were swept downstream, with two reaching a river island and becoming stranded there. One person trapped on a log in the river was later rescued by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Current Status and Coordinated Response
Of the 11 people involved (four originally stranded and seven rescuers), six have been brought to safety so far. Four individuals remain stranded on the island, and one of the original stranded persons is still unaccounted for.
A joint rescue team comprising 30 NDRF personnel, state police, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is actively engaged in the operation. An Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter is also scheduled to provide aerial support starting early on June 29.
District authorities and disaster management teams continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts to locate the missing person and ensure the safety of those stranded on the island remain underway.
