The Lower Siang district administration in Arunachal Pradesh has issued an emergency advisory directing residents living along both banks of the Siji River to move to safer higher ground as a precautionary measure following a massive landslide that has blocked the river’s natural flow.

Potential Flash Flood Threat from Blocked River

Continuous heavy rainfall in the region triggered a major landslide at the Siji–Magi Block Point, creating a temporary natural dam that has obstructed the river. Authorities have warned that any sudden breach of this blockage could unleash a powerful flash flood downstream without advance notice, endangering lives, homes, livestock, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure.

The Siji River flows into Assam, where it is locally known as the Gai Nadi in Dhemaji district, raising concerns for communities on both sides of the border.

Key Safety Instructions for Public

Residents in vulnerable areas have been placed on high alert and instructed to strictly follow official advisories. People are advised to stay away from riverbanks, avoid unnecessary travel near the river, and be prepared for immediate relocation when instructed. The administration has urged prompt reporting of any unusual rise in water levels, strange sounds, or signs of blockage weakening to the nearest administrative or police office.

Lower Siang Superintendent of Police Bomken Basar emphasized that the accumulated water continues to pose a significant risk. The district has intensified awareness campaigns through public announcements, media, telephone alerts, and social media to reach maximum residents. Coordination messages have also been shared with authorities in Assam for downstream preparedness.

While some water has reportedly begun receding through one side of the channel, the overall risk remains high. Army personnel have been alerted to assist in case of any emergency, and all concerned agencies remain on standby.
