New 10-member District Technical Unit formed for maintenance
Focus on long-term sustainability and water source protection
The Jal Jeevan Mission, launched by the Government of India, aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections to all rural households by 2024. Lower Subansiri’s success stands out as an inspiring example in the Northeast.
During the review, officials discussed several important steps to maintain this achievement. They stressed the importance of protecting water sources against climate change and seasonal changes.
A dedicated 10-member District Technical Unit (DTU) has been created. This team of engineers, consultants, and operators will monitor and maintain all water supply schemes in the district.
Authorities also plan to:
Identify and protect reliable water sources
Include newly emerged habitations in the coverage
Strengthen Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs)
Improve revenue collection for better service quality
Access to clean tap water at home transforms daily life. Women and children no longer need to spend hours fetching water from distant sources. This achievement improves health, hygiene, and overall quality of life for thousands of families in the hilly terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.
Officials will now focus on long-term sustainability. Plans include regular monitoring, community participation, and expanding coverage to any new settlements. The district administration remains committed to maintaining this 100% status.
The success of Lower Subansiri is expected to motivate other districts in Arunachal Pradesh to accelerate their Jal Jeevan Mission implementation.
