Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) KT Parnaik has called for a special development approach for hill states like Arunachal Pradesh, urging policymakers not to apply uniform parameters used for plains regions when designing national strategies.
Speaking on May 15 during a meeting with Dr Joram Aniya at Lok Bhavan in Itanagar, the Governor highlighted the distinct challenges posed by the state’s rugged Himalayan terrain, low population density, strategic border location, and rich cultural diversity. He stressed that these factors demand customised policy interventions and enhanced priority in national planning frameworks.
Governor Parnaik pointed out Arunachal Pradesh’s immense potential in sectors such as hydropower generation, eco-tourism, environmental conservation, and preservation of its vibrant cultural heritage. He advocated for greater national attention and targeted support to unlock this potential while addressing the unique developmental hurdles faced by frontier hill states.
He emphasised that one-size-fits-all development models often fall short in regions with difficult geography and sensitive demographics. Instead, tailored strategies that respect local realities are essential for achieving balanced and inclusive growth, particularly in strategically vital border areas.
The Governor extended warm congratulations to Dr Joram Aniya on her recent appointment to NITI Aayog. He expressed confidence that her expertise and vision would help shape more people-centric and inclusive policies beneficial to both the state and the nation at large.
This statement underscores the growing recognition at senior levels that Northeast hill states require nuanced attention to bridge infrastructure gaps, promote sustainable livelihoods, and safeguard ecological and cultural identities. Observers see it as a timely reminder for stronger collaboration between the Centre and state governments to ensure equitable development across India’s diverse landscape.
