ST Bachao Andolan Alleges Illegal Entry, Cash Demands at Arunachal’s Hollongi Check Gate

A prominent tribal rights organisation in Arunachal Pradesh has raised serious concerns over alleged irregularities at the Hollongi check gate, claiming that several individuals were allowed entry without valid documents while others were asked to pay money to cross into the state.

Members of the Arunachal ST Bachao Andolan, a group dedicated to safeguarding Scheduled Tribe rights and indigenous identity, conducted an on-ground inspection of the check gate starting late on May 9. Led by chairman Sol Dodum and general secretary Milo Ambo, the team reportedly witnessed multiple instances of lax enforcement of entry protocols.

The group has alleged that several travellers entered Arunachal Pradesh without producing valid Inner Line Permits (ILP), a mandatory requirement for non-locals. More worryingly, four individuals reportedly told the team that they each paid Rs 500 to personnel at the gate to gain entry. The organisation described these claims as a direct breach of official procedures and a matter of grave concern for the protection of indigenous rights and state security.

Hollongi check gate serves as a key entry point into Arunachal Pradesh, making strict monitoring essential to regulate movement and preserve the state’s unique demographic and cultural fabric. The ST Bachao Andolan has demanded immediate accountability, greater transparency in gate operations, and enhanced oversight to prevent such alleged violations in the future.

The organisation emphasised that proper implementation of the ILP system is crucial for protecting the interests of tribal communities. It has called upon the state administration to investigate the matter thoroughly and take corrective action against any erring officials.

This development has drawn attention to the functioning of border check points in the state. Authorities are yet to issue an official response to the allegations. The incident highlights the ongoing need for robust mechanisms to balance development, tourism, and the preservation of tribal identity in Arunachal Pradesh.
