Guwahati: The Assam government has ordered the immediate closure of all educational institutions in Guwahati following severe flash floods that have disrupted normal life in the city.
In an official order issued on April 20, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration directed all schools, colleges, and other educational institutions in Guwahati to remain closed on April 21, 2026. The decision was taken in view of the heavy waterlogging in several parts of the city and to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Low-lying areas, including major educational hubs, have been severely affected by the flash floods triggered by heavy overnight rainfall. Many roads have become impassable, and several localities are reporting knee-deep to waist-deep water.
The order applies to all government, private, and higher educational institutions across the Guwahati metropolitan area. Authorities have advised parents and students to check official notifications before venturing out.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) and local administration are closely monitoring the situation. Drainage teams have been deployed to clear waterlogged areas, but several low-lying zones are still struggling with water accumulation.
This is the second time this month that educational institutions in Guwahati have been forced to shut down due to heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
