A series of earthquakes shook multiple regions across North and East India on Monday, February 17, 2025, causing panic among residents. Strong tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and Haryana, prompting people to rush out of their homes in fear.
Earthquake Strikes Bihar and Odisha
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 hit Siwan, Bihar, at 8:02 AM. The epicenter was located 10 km underground, but no damages have been reported from Siwan or nearby districts.
Later, at 8:15 AM, another earthquake measuring 4.7 magnitude struck Puri, Odisha. While tremors were felt in the district, there is no confirmation yet on whether other cities in Odisha were affected. Fortunately, no casualties or damage have been reported.
Tremors in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana
Tremors were also felt across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. The earthquake measured 4.0 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter near Dhaulakuan’s Lake Park at a depth of 5 km. Due to its shallow depth, strong vibrations were experienced across multiple cities, including:
- Uttar Pradesh: Moradabad, Saharanpur, Alwar, Mathura, Agra
- Haryana: Kurukshetra, Hisar, Kaithal
There have been no reports of structural damage or injuries.
PM Modi’s Appeal for Caution
Following the tremors in Delhi-NCR, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to remain alert. In a post on social media platform X, he stated:
“Earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas. I urge everyone to stay calm, follow safety precautions, and remain alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.”
Authorities continue to assess the impact of the tremors while ensuring public safety.
