Arunachal Pradesh Introduces ‘Snake and Ladder’ Initiative for Localized SDGs at SARAS Fair

On January 13, 2025, during the inauguration of the 10-day Arunachal SARAS Fair at the DK Convention Centre in Itanagar, Chief Minister Pema Khandu launched the ‘Snake and Ladder’ initiative aimed at localizing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the state.

SARAS Fair: A Platform for Rural Artisans

The SARAS Fair serves as an annual marketing platform organized by the state government, enabling local entrepreneurs and rural artisans to showcase their products. This event aligns with the ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, promoting sustainable livelihoods and self-reliance among rural communities.

Empowering Women Through Self-Help Groups

In his address, Chief Minister Khandu emphasized the pivotal role of women in the development of villages and, by extension, the state and nation. He announced the provision of ₹3 crore in seed money to support women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs) engaged in traditional crafts such as weaving, crochet, knitting, embroidery, and handicrafts. This funding aims to enhance the skills of rural artisans, support sustainable livelihoods, and preserve the traditional arts and crafts of Arunachal Pradesh.

‘Snake and Ladder’ Initiative: Simplifying SDGs

The ‘Snake and Ladder’ initiative is designed to simplify the understanding and implementation of SDGs at the grassroots level. By utilizing the familiar game format, it educates and engages local communities, making the global goals more accessible and actionable. This approach is part of a broader effort to localize SDGs, ensuring that development is inclusive and leaves no one behind.

Arunachal Pradesh’s Progress in SDG Implementation

Arunachal Pradesh has demonstrated significant commitment to achieving SDGs, having attained ‘Front Runner’ status in the SDG scorecard as of August 2024. The state continues to pursue all SDG goals with a saturation approach, reflecting its dedication to sustainable development.

Conclusion

The launch of the ‘Snake and Ladder’ initiative at the SARAS Fair represents a creative and culturally resonant method to promote localized understanding and implementation of SDGs in Arunachal Pradesh. By empowering women through SHGs and engaging communities with innovative educational tools, the state is making significant strides toward sustainable and inclusive development.
