Plot Foiled: Assam Rifles Nabs Two ULFA(I) Men Before They Could Strike on a Remote Arunachal Road

Security forces intercept two armed insurgents allegedly planning an ambush and IED blast on the strategically vital Miao-Vijaynagar route — and they say up to 18 more could still be out there.

A lethal plan may have just been stopped in its tracks deep inside the forests of Arunachal Pradesh.

Assam Rifles, working in close coordination with Changlang and Tinsukia police, apprehended two suspected ULFA(I) cadres who were allegedly plotting an ambush and an IED attack along the Miao-Vijaynagar road. This wasn’t a routine patrol that stumbled onto something. The operation was deliberately launched on September 29, triggered by specific intelligence inputs warning of a possible attack in the area.

The two men didn’t get far. They were identified as SS Lance Corporal Sahdev Rai, alias Bappi Akhom, and SS Private Siraju Alam, alias Shiraj Asom. Aliases like those are common in insurgent networks — a small but telling detail that speaks to the organised, systematic nature of outfits like ULFA(I). These weren’t rogue individuals acting alone.

When security forces searched them, what they found made the threat very real. An AK-series rifle, three magazines, and 90 live rounds were recovered during the operation. That’s not a small personal arsenal — that’s a combat kit.

And here’s where things get more unsettling. During questioning, the two reportedly revealed that they were part of a larger group of around 20 armed cadres. Which means that while two have been caught, nearly an entire squad may still be somewhere in those dense forests. Security forces clearly understand the gravity of that. Search and combing operations are continuing in the area to locate the other suspected insurgents.

The road where all this was allegedly going to unfold deserves attention. The Miao-Vijaynagar road cuts through the remote Changlang district and the Namdapha landscape — one of the most biodiverse and isolated stretches in the entire Northeast. It’s not just remote jungle; the route is strategically significant and forms part of the proposed Kharsang-Miao-Vijaynagar Frontier Highway, designated NH-913. A road that close to the border, in that kind of terrain — an attack there would have sent a message far beyond Changlang district.

Security forces say the operation prevented what could have been a devastating attack targeting both security personnel and civilians, and that the arrests could now provide crucial leads about the group’s network, operational methods, and future plans.

This comes just days after another incident rattled the same region — NSCN (K-YA) and RPF claimed responsibility for an ambush in Changlang that killed an Assam Rifles jawan. The timing of this new plot, in the same district, raises serious questions about whether insurgent groups are coordinating or simply emboldened by recent events.

The Assam Rifles stated that the operation reflected their intelligence-based approach and the forces’ continued commitment to maintaining security in the region.

That commitment is being tested regularly now. The forests of Changlang are vast, the roads are few, and the threats — as this week has shown — are very much alive. Two men are in custody. The search for the rest has only just begun.
