Galwan shook the nation. Now there are fresh fears that something deeply troubling may be unfolding along the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh — and the government is saying very little.
On the morning of India’s Independence Day, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took to social media with a question that cut right to the bone: “After Galwan, now Arunachal Pradesh?” The four words landed like a grenade. Kharge was responding to reports suggesting that Chinese People’s Liberation Army troops had been restricting the movement of Indian forces in sensitive areas of the LAC, and that access to key patrolling zones may have quietly slipped away.
The Questions Nobody in Delhi Seems to Want to Answer
Kharge demanded that PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah clarify whether the PLA had expanded its presence near Taksing and whether Indian forces had lost regular access to Shera-5, a designated Patrolling Point. These aren’t fringe concerns — Shera-5 is a strategically significant location, and losing patrol access there is the kind of thing that doesn’t make headlines until it’s too late. Kharge also questioned whether Indian troops were being restricted from patrolling the sensitive sector during winter, while the PLA maintained a presence there throughout the entire year. That’s an asymmetry no government should be comfortable leaving unexplained.
The Ground Realities Hitting Local Communities
The Congress president raised another deeply human concern — asking why traditional grazing and hunting grounds were becoming inaccessible to local communities in the region. This is often the first sign that something has shifted on the ground. Long before satellite images confirm troop movements, it’s the shepherds and hunters who notice the invisible walls being erected. Rahul Gandhi had raised similar alarms the previous day, claiming that China had stopped Indian troops from patrolling certain areas along the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh, and accusing the government of trying to hide it. Whether or not the full picture is that stark, the silence from New Delhi has done little to reassure anyone.
Galwan’s Shadow and a Government Under Fire
Kharge referenced the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed, and criticised Modi’s handling of relations with China, saying the government’s response had emboldened Chinese transgressions. The opposition’s broader argument is becoming harder to dismiss — especially when Kharge questioned whether the pre-May 2020 status quo in eastern Ladakh had been fully restored, and accused the BJP government of withholding information about the situation along the border.
What Beijing and New Delhi Are Saying
The Ministry of External Affairs said India regards matters concerning its border areas with China as “most serious,” stressing that maintaining peace and tranquillity along the LAC remains of “utmost importance.” Strong words — but words, nonetheless. China, for its part, said the situation along the India-China border was “generally stable,” while declining to comment specifically on reports of increased military activity near Arunachal Pradesh. “Generally stable” is the kind of diplomatic non-answer that raises more questions than it settles. The government has not yet issued a specific response to the Congress allegations or confirmed any such development in Arunachal Pradesh.
When a government chooses silence over transparency on matters of national territory, it doesn’t inspire confidence — it invites suspicion. Arunachal’s mountains have never been just geography. They are home, history, and sovereignty all at once. The people of this land deserve answers, not press releases.
