The students of Arunachal Pradesh aren’t blinking. And they want the government to know it.
The All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) has once again slammed the table on the controversial 80:20 job reservation ratio — this time leaving zero room for doubt. The Union has made its position crystal clear: the policy must go, completely and unconditionally.
No Room for Half Measures
AAPSU President Meje Taku, speaking in an exclusive interview, said the Union remains firmly and uncompromisingly opposed to the existing reservation policy. There’s no softening of tone here, no diplomatic language. “We will not compromise on this issue under any circumstances,” Taku stated bluntly. For a student body that has been fighting this battle for a while now, those words carry real weight. This isn’t just rhetoric — it’s a line drawn in the sand.
What the 80:20 Ratio Actually Means
For those catching up, the 80:20 job reservation ratio has been a deeply contested policy in Arunachal Pradesh. The formula dictates the proportion of government jobs distributed between different groups, and many indigenous communities along with the student body have long argued that it works against the interests of the state’s native people. AAPSU’s core demand is simple — scrap it entirely, not tweak it, not review it. Scrap it.
Eyes on the Government Committee
The Arunachal Pradesh government recently constituted a committee to examine the matter — perhaps in a bid to buy time or find a middle path. But AAPSU isn’t buying it. Taku made it clear that the Union would closely monitor the committee’s proceedings. That means they’re watching every move. Any attempt to water down the demand or use the committee as a stalling tactic is likely to be called out swiftly. The pressure on the government, at this point, is very real.
Addressing the “Hijack” Allegations
Interestingly, Taku also addressed what appears to be a growing narrative — that AAPSU has somehow hijacked this movement. He rejected those allegations head-on, saying the Union is simply representing the genuine concerns and aspirations of the students and indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh. It’s worth noting that student unions often become easy targets when movements gain momentum. But AAPSU seems unbothered by those labels and is staying the course.
The Fight Isn’t Over
AAPSU has assured that the democratic movement will continue in full force until the 80:20 reservation ratio is formally and completely withdrawn. No partial victories. No quiet retreats. The Union is in this for the long haul, and that alone sends a strong message to Itanagar. Sometimes, in politics, it’s not just what you say — it’s how long you’re willing to stand and say it.
