Heavy monsoon rains have intensified devastation across Arunachal Pradesh, claiming at least three lives while leaving two people missing as flash floods, landslides, and widespread infrastructure damage affect multiple districts. Rescue and relief operations are underway amid challenging conditions.
Key Incidents and Rescue Efforts
In Lower Dibang Valley, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully rescued four individuals stranded on an island in the Sisiri River at Dambuk after floodwaters isolated them. However, heavy rainfall has severely damaged the Roing-Anini road, washing away sections and disrupting connectivity in the region.
Search operations entered their sixth day in Keyi Panyor district following the flash flood at the NEEPCO colony in Poosa. The death toll in that incident rose to three with the recovery of Saurabh Kumar Kharwar’s body. Two others remain missing. Around 128 households have been affected, with 60 people currently sheltered in a relief camp.
Additional Fatalities and Road Disruptions
In Anjaw district, an excavator operator is feared dead after a massive boulder crushed the machine during highway construction work near Sarti village on the Walong road. Rescue efforts resumed after being suspended overnight due to poor visibility and further rockfall risks.
East Siang district remained on high alert with numerous roads blocked or damaged. Floodwaters inundated houses in the Ledum area, displacing families and causing significant property loss. In Lower Siang, a landslide blocked the Siji River, raising downstream flood concerns before water levels began receding.
Broader Impact Across the State
At least 12 districts, including Keyi Panyor, Papum Pare, Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey, Lower Subansiri, Kamle, Upper Subansiri, East Siang, Leparada, Lower Siang, Lower Dibang Valley, and Anjaw, have been impacted by the relentless rain. The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in several areas.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid travel through flood- and landslide-prone zones and to strictly follow official advisories as rescue and restoration efforts continue.
