The opposition INDIA alliance is preparing to take out a march from the Parliament House complex to Rashtrapati Bhavan, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is preparing to lead the protest once again with opposition MPs, as the alliance steps up its campaign against what it calls “vote chori” — alleged manipulation of electoral rolls.
The March Plan
According to reports, opposition MPs plan to meet in the Central Hall before taking out the march to Rashtrapati Bhavan, where they hope to meet President Droupadi Murmu and raise their concerns over the SIR process. Opposition leaders have sought time for the meeting, though earlier requests for an appointment had not been confirmed.
The opposition says that if time to meet the President is not available, it will decide its further strategy. Permission for the march, its route and official confirmation of the event are still awaited.
Demands: CEC’s Resignation and SIR Probe
The alliance is demanding the removal of Gyanesh Kumar from the post of Chief Election Commissioner and an investigation into alleged irregularities in the SIR process. The opposition alleges that irregularities in the voter lists could affect the democratic process.
Rahul Gandhi has contacted senior INDIA alliance leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav and Uddhav Thackeray, asking them to reach Delhi to build a joint strategy on the issue.
EC and Former Judges Push Back
The Election Commission and the government have denied any wrongdoing in the revision of voter lists. Separately, a group of 42 retired judges came out in support of the poll body, defending its handling of electoral rolls and backing the SIR exercise in an open letter.
