The clouds rolling in over Arunachal Pradesh this weekend are not ordinary monsoon drizzle. The India Meteorological Department has sounded a formal alert — rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are on their way, and they are not coming alone.
Starting Sunday, September 6, IMD has forecast rain and thunderstorms at several places across Arunachal Pradesh, with multiple districts likely to experience adverse weather conditions over the next four days. If you live in any of the state’s hilly or riverside areas, this is not a forecast to scroll past.
The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) has already stepped in, advising residents — particularly those in vulnerable and landslide-prone areas — to stay alert during periods of intense weather. That warning alone says a lot. When the SEOC speaks up this early, the situation on the ground has potential to get serious fast.
Sunday takes the worst of it first. West Kameng, East Kameng, Papum Pare, Siang, Upper Siang, East Siang, Namsai, Changlang, Tirap and Longding are all in the line of rain and thunderstorms. That is a long list — covering a wide swath of the state, from the western districts right down to the far eastern corners. Among these, East Kameng, Papum Pare, Changlang and parts of Tirap are likely to receive heavier rainfall, which means those areas should be on extra high alert for waterlogging and flash flood risks.
Monday brings a slight shift in geography but no real relief. Tawang, Kamle, Lepa Rada, Namsai, Tirap and Longding are expected to witness rain and thunderstorms, with thunderstorm activity specifically forecast over Tawang and Kamle. Tawang’s high-altitude terrain makes lightning events particularly dangerous, and residents there know all too well how quickly weather can turn at that elevation.
By Tuesday, Kurung Kumey, Lepa Rada, Tirap and Longding are likely to be affected, with thunderstorm and lightning activity forecast across these areas. And it does not stop there. The adverse weather is expected to continue into Wednesday, when Kurung Kumey, Changlang, Tirap and Longding are likely to remain under the weather watch.
Notice that Tirap and Longding appear on every single day of this four-day forecast. Those districts, already among the most geographically challenging in the state, are looking at a relentless stretch of dangerous weather. Roads could wash out. Bridges could flood. Connectivity with the outside world — always fragile in these corners of Arunachal — could snap entirely.
The IMD warning map has placed affected districts under alert and watch status, indicating the possibility of disruption due to heavy rain, lightning and thunderstorms. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions, particularly in areas vulnerable to landslides and flooding.
This is not the time to wait and watch from a window. If you have elderly family members, young children, or anyone living near riverbanks or steep hillsides, check on them now — not after the storm hits. September in Arunachal is never gentle, but four consecutive days of widespread thunderstorm activity is a reminder that this land, as beautiful as it is, demands respect every single monsoon season.
