When floodwaters swallow entire villages and roads simply vanish overnight, what people need most is to know someone at the top is paying attention. This week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made sure they got that message.
A Meeting That Mattered
On July 30, PM Modi sat down with Members of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland at Parliament House in New Delhi — not a scheduled press briefing, not a televised address, but an actual closed-door meeting where the ground reality of the Northeast’s flood crisis was put squarely on the table. After the meeting, Modi took to X and wrote clearly: the Central Government will keep working with the respective state governments to address the challenges. He also added a prayer for everyone’s wellbeing and safety. Short, direct, and exactly what the situation called for.
Rijiju Backs It Up
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who was present at the meeting, went a step further in spelling out what came out of it. He confirmed that Modi had already issued necessary directions for ensuring timely relief, restoration and support for the people affected — and that the MPs had personally apprised the PM of the ground situation in both states. That kind of direct communication between grassroots representatives and the country’s top leadership doesn’t always happen. When it does, it matters.
What’s Happening on the Ground
The scale of destruction across Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland has been severe. Weeks of relentless rainfall triggered landslides, burst riverbanks, and washed away roads and homes. The kind of damage that takes years and serious money to rebuild. In Nagaland, the situation spilled beyond its borders — heavy rainfall there contributed to a catastrophic flood in Upper Assam that left more than three lakh people displaced and claimed over 70 lives. These aren’t just statistics. These are families, communities, entire livelihoods buried under water and mud.
The Northeast Needs More Than Reassurance
It is genuinely reassuring to see PM Modi engage directly on this. The Northeast too often finds itself waiting at the back of the queue when national attention is being distributed. But reassurance from Delhi, however sincere, now needs to translate fast into action on the ground — relief camps, road restoration, and rebuilding support that actually reaches the people who need it, not just press releases confirming it will. The next few weeks will be the real test.
The rains aren’t done yet. And neither, hopefully, is the Centre’s resolve to stand with these states through what may still be a long and difficult season.
