Protest Erupts at Raj Bhavan Gates
On July 21, the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) marched straight to Raj Bhavan in Itanagar and made their anger known. Party workers gathered outside the gates to condemn what they called a blatant misuse of police power by the BJP-led Union government. The protest was led by APCC president Bosiram Siram — and by all accounts, the mood was tense, charged, and very deliberate. This wasn’t a routine political rally. It felt like a line being drawn.
“You’re Silencing the Wrong People”
Siram didn’t mince words. He alleged that instead of addressing genuine concerns over repeated examination irregularities that have been fuelling student protests across the country, the Centre chose to detain Opposition leaders and intimidate demonstrators. “The BJP-led government has once again exposed its intolerance towards democratic dissent by using the police machinery to suppress the voice of the Opposition,” he said, addressing the crowd. That’s a serious charge — and it resonated with the workers who had gathered there under Itanagar’s July heat.
The Demand That’s Cutting Through the Noise
The APCC’s loudest demand? The immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The party holds him directly responsible for what it describes as a catastrophic failure to protect the integrity of India’s public examination system and, by extension, the futures of millions of students. They also called for a comprehensive parliamentary debate on the ongoing examination controversies and pushed for greater transparency and accountability in how these exams are conducted. These aren’t fringe demands — they echo what students in Delhi and other cities have been saying for weeks.
FIRs, Students, and a Government That Isn’t Listening
What added real heat to the protest was the APCC’s call to withdraw all FIRs filed against students who took part in the Delhi protests. The Congress here in Arunachal is essentially saying: you came down hard on kids asking legitimate questions, and that is unacceptable. They also expressed solidarity with students across the country and made it clear that their agitation — through peaceful and democratic means — isn’t going away anytime soon. The BJP-led Union government, for its part, has not responded to the APCC’s specific allegations.
The Congress leaders made one thing crystal clear before dispersing — detaining Rahul Gandhi may have made headlines, but it has not broken the party’s resolve. If anything, it seems to have sharpened it. When a government starts arresting the Opposition for asking questions, the questions don’t disappear. They just get louder.
