From Students to Saffron: Former AAPSU Heavyweights Make a Big Move, Join BJP in Arunachal

Student politics and mainstream party politics have always had a complicated relationship in Arunachal Pradesh. But on Monday, that line got a lot blurrier — and the BJP is clearly not complaining.

A Room Full of Big Names

Several former leaders of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) officially joined the BJP on July 6, in what turned out to be quite a high-profile induction event. The ceremony took place in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, state BJP president Kaling Moyong, Rajya Sabha MP Tai Tagak, and other senior party leaders. When you look at the gathering in that room, it tells you everything about how seriously the party took this moment.

Who Walked Through That Door

This wasn’t just a bunch of low-profile names looking for a political launchpad. Among those who joined were former AAPSU president Tana Doji Tara, former general secretary Ritum Tali, and former student leaders Pangngam Wangnaw, Suraj Tayem and Pakmik Taipodia, along with several others. These are people who have spent years building credibility on the ground — first inside AAPSU, and now apparently, inside the BJP. The induction programme was also attended by Horticulture and Agriculture Minister Gabriel Wangsu, BJP leader Zingnu Namchoom and BJP general secretary Tadar Niglar.

Why Now? The Leaders Speak

After joining, Tana Doji Tara and Ritum Tali didn’t beat around the bush. They said they had been encouraged by the BJP government’s developmental initiatives in Arunachal Pradesh over the past decade, expressed confidence in the party’s ideology, and pledged to work in line with its principles. Whether that conviction is ideological or strategic — probably a bit of both, honestly — the timing is hard to ignore. The BJP has been on a consolidation drive across the Northeast, and bringing experienced student leaders into the fold fits neatly into that playbook.

What the Party Wants From Them

Rajya Sabha MP Tai Tagak, welcoming the new entrants, said their experience in student leadership would help them emerge as public leaders and contribute to spreading awareness about government schemes and policies at the grassroots level. That’s the party acknowledging exactly what it’s getting — not just faces, but networks. People who know how to talk to communities.

Eyes on the Constituencies That Got Away

The most telling part of the whole event came from BJP state president Kaling Moyong. He welcomed the former student leaders and urged party workers to strengthen the organisation across the state, specifically calling for greater focus on the Liromoba and Doimukh Assembly constituencies, where the BJP was defeated in the last Assembly elections. That’s a candid admission wrapped inside a welcome speech — and it signals that this isn’t just symbolism. The party has a map, it knows where the gaps are, and it’s actively plugging them.

Student leaders turned party foot soldiers. In Arunachal’s politics, this is how legacies are built — and sometimes, how elections are quietly won before they even begin.
