A young woman was just going to her computer class. She never expected that morning to turn into something she’d have to fight her way out of — literally.

The Incident That Nobody Forgot

It was June 9. The woman was walking through Rayo Colony in Nirjuli, Arunachal Pradesh, headed to her computer classes — a completely ordinary morning. That’s when a man started following her. According to Naharlagun Police, the accused didn’t just follow her. He touched her inappropriately and then brazenly exposed himself during the chase. The woman was terrified, yes — but she didn’t freeze. She picked up stones and pelted them at the accused until he turned and fled. That act of raw courage probably saved her from something far worse.

A Video Goes Viral, Police Move Fast

What might have stayed a local complaint quickly blew up on social media. A video from the incident spread across platforms, and public outrage did what it often does in cases like these — it pushed the system to act. Nirjuli Police registered an FIR and booked the case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 74, 75(2), 78(2), 79, and 296. An investigation was launched, and the clock was already ticking for the accused.

The Hunt, the Hiding, the Arrest

Police identified the accused as Imdadul Rahman, 26, a labourer from Sonapur in Assam’s North Lakhimpur district who had been working in the Nirjuli area. After the incident, Rahman apparently knew things were heating up — so he slipped away and tried to hide back in Sonapur. Didn’t work. A police team tracked him down under Dolakhat and arrested him. Weeks on the run, and it still ended in handcuffs. As it should.

SP Praises the Survivor — And Rightly So

Superintendent of Police Dr Nyelam Nega publicly praised the woman for doing two things that many victims of such crimes don’t get to do — resisting in the moment and then reporting it. The SP reaffirmed the police’s commitment to women’s safety and made it clear that crimes like this will not be brushed aside. That kind of public accountability from law enforcement matters, especially in smaller towns where victims often stay silent out of fear.

The Bigger Picture

This case is uncomfortable, but it needs to be talked about. A woman couldn’t walk to her own class without being harassed. The fact that she fought back and that the system responded — that’s the part worth holding onto. Because not every woman gets that outcome. Imdadul Rahman is now in custody. The case moves forward. But the real question that lingers is — how many such incidents never make it past the fear?
